Response: You know, I'd been thinking about that, and I'm pretty sure they get up to a little more than just having long talks about finches...

Martij rated for HPC: Inverted Image on Jan 31, 2009

Comment: I really like your inverted image. You're right, it is surprising what the colors do, mine is of leaves and they look very translucent in their purple hue! Thanks for the exercise, I hadn't experimented with this. You get a star for helping to stretch my creative side!
Response: Awesome! I love giving people the excuse to make new and exciting stuff.

Comment: I loved your postcard! How do you do the foil transfer? It's very cool. Thanks so much.
Response: You can buy transfer foil at some craft supply stores (I live in NYC and can get it at Pearl Paint), and the stuff is designed to be able to be heat transferred to fabric using special glue, but you can also easily iron it onto the toner of most photocopies. Super easy and gorgeous!

Comment: I LOVE the fish you drew! It could indeed be an opera singer, but it also reminds me of the "breeder" (i.e. pregnant) fish in a silly video game I've been playing. :)
Response: Whoah! There's a video game with pregnant fish? That sounds pretty cool! There's a little interactive game at the New York Aquarium where you played a school of sea jellies, and had to go find food and avoid predators and boat propellers and increase your population, but all the consoles are usually broken.

Comment: I LOVED this postcard! What an interesting fact and I loved how you illustrated it! It made me crack up! Thanks again for such a fun postcard!
Response: Yay! I had tons of fun doing that card, and I must say, I don't usually draw very well at all, but that bat came out pretty darn adorable! I love that bats apparently don't have cell phones. The photoshop coloring is something I learned how to do at my old job, where I colored drawings of Barbie and her friends and clothes and props for little animated videos that were packaged with the My Scene Mattel toys. Which was actually way cooler than it sounds!

Response: Hooray for nude people! Maybe some day if I have the chutzpah I'll host a nude handmade art doll swap. We'll see... I'm used to postcard swaps, which are a little less labor intensive, but nude art dolls might just be awesome enough to trump my laziness!

Comment: Fabulous Picture!!! I was in a calendar once, but making sausage. Hmmmm...Pin-up or Sausage maker? I think you win in the "cool" department. Thank you!!!
Response: I don't know... I think making sausage might just beat out even the most alluring pinup pose... I'm trying and failing to picture the pinup shot that would combine sausage making with the traditional pinup aesthetic.

Response: I have a whole process that I use, and the only thing that you might not have access to is the laminator. Well, that and possibly the inkjet printer... and possibly the joss paper... Clearly I have no way of knowing what sort of tools you've got! But I swear, the technique is much easier than it looks!

Comment: Thank you for your awesome card (and for taking a chance on a newbie in your swaps)! I received it yesterday and I was really glad that you explained how you made it; I never would have guessed. Was there any common theme in the images that you choose?
Response: You know, it's really funny that you ask that question, because the xerox-transfer part of the card was done when I was in high school, and I really am wracking my brain to see if I can remember any common theme... I think the theme may have been "the pile of images I grabbed before heading out the door to the copy shop". The watercolor part of the image was literally done the same day that I dropped it into them mailbox!

Comment: Thank you so much for the postcard! I love it, there is so much to look at. I have never heard of xerox transfer before, it is absolutely fascinating! Wonderful to see in the mail.
Response: Xerox transfer is amazing, and I'm sure if you'd like to try it out, there are a million tutorials and suggestions on the web. My three suggestions: Very fresh copies, Chartpak blender pen, and VENTILATION!

Comment: thanks for the postcard! i absolutely love it. did you know that i'm a ketchup fanatic? i use it on pretty much everything. thanks again!!
Response: Wow, what a great coincidence! I always feel like we ketchup lovers have to stand up for ourselves, as people are always trash talking about ketchup. I was at the Mount Horeb Mustard Museum a while back and there was a t-shirt that had some sort of slogan about how only silly wimpy people use ketchup because mustard is the only real condiment (or something to that effect), and I wanted to clue them in about how mustard and ketchup are actually really good friends! Anyway, glad you liked the card!
