Description:

EDITED: DUE TO FEEDBACK FROM SWAPPERS WE WILL NOW HAVE 2 PARTNERS INSTEAD OF 1!!!

Freeform/Scrumbling is your own original design, not a reproduction of another person's pattern, in fact there is NO pattern!! I have never been one to follow a pattern so when I discovered freeform crochet I fell in love.

For this swap challenge each swapper will make 2 scrumbles to send to 2 people. Total of 4 scrumbles.

Please create 4 scrumbles approx 6x6 inches in size. ( If there is interest we could continue a series of Scrumbles - then we'd eventually have enough for a scarf, purse, or lap blanket or whatever your little heart desires to make! Let me know what you think )

You may crochet or Knit, or BOTH! You are free to use any type of yarn/fiber and any and all colors!! The more the merrier! Since this is a "your choice" swap, you may start anytime. You can find lots of awesome sites on the web about freeform crochet/knitting. Prudence Mapstone is the "queen" of freeform. Her site is:

http://www.knotjustknitting.com/

She has good instructions for getting started on this site. But in a nutshell you just start crocheting/knitting a shape - any shape - using different stitches, then end that color and start adding onto your piece with another color and different stitches, then just keep going on and on and on.........! It is THAT easy!

Now that I've signed up, tell me, what do you do with them once you get them or make them? Hang them? Join them into a blanket? I'm curious! Also, do we just send one?

This looks like so much fun! I love trying new things and this is the kind of thing that could be addictive! :0) Mum and I are in the Amigurumi swap and have had so much fun trying the new skills!:0)

Hi there! Here are some ideas on what you can do with these if we end up with a collection of them- lap blanket,purse,shawl/wrap,scarf,etc. What do you think about having 2 partners? Let me know....

Newfpink 01/16/2008 #

This sounds like so much fun! I've been playing with scrumbles for awhile now and it is addicting.

kgeslab 01/16/2008 #

I'm sure I could do 2 or 3 partners. Then we could link them together into something.

kgeslab 01/22/2008 #

I've been trying this out and they just don't look so good. Any suggestions?

poofsizzle 01/24/2008 #

Hi - I'm not joining mostly becasue I don't see myself completing one, much less two durring time constraints. But I like the idea. Kgeslab - one technique I use in making these kinds of projects is to make a collection of small bits that I like and then join them together, think of approaching them as a natural puzzle - fitting them together so that your crochet (or knit) between the elements is minimized. Or conversly start with one element that you really like - usually something with a destinctive pattern or shape and then build around it. Sometimes it helps to have a theme- colors, shapes or a subject like the forrest or the ocean or the stars...

Hi there! I agree with poofsizzle, you could try both techniques and see which you like better - Don't stress about it looking odd though, they are meant to be kinda "off the wall" Just have fun with it!

I am also interested in a scrumble swap, but am a bit overextended at the time. In case anyone wants to see a picture of a purse in progress made in freeform crochet, go here

Oops, I guess you can't leave clickable links. Here's a link: http://farm1.static.flickr.com/163/390498906bcc51e7d8as.jpg or if that still doesn't work it's one of the last pics on my Flickr site http://www.flickr.com/photos/lilypadsis/

kgeslab, I tend pick a main color and use different weights/types of yarn to scrumble. I add in a few contrast colors. I like my results much better than absolutely random colors. But I would also say that freeform pieces are a bit of an aquired taste :). Go on flickr.com or do a google search for "freeform crochet" or "freeform knitting" and take a look at samples. Some you will like and some you won't but use those you like as inspiration.

One down and three to go. These are labor intensive!

cerwinrhiannon 02/21/2008 #

I'm having a hard time getting mine 6". I have been doing a lot of surface work on them though, so I don't know what to do. I've tried adding things, but it just doesn't look right.

cerwinrhiannon 02/23/2008 #

Two ready to go out to Linda.

cerwinrhiannon 02/24/2008 #

Three down, one to go.
