Description:

In this swap we are going to make some really scrappy CrAzY FuN 9 PaTcH. I found a video tutorial and some written out directions to make this block - it is so simple and fun to do. I have my teenager working on one for a summer quilt! I wanted to do one that was really scrappy, so I started the swap.

The block is super fun and modern perfect for beginning quilters and experts! I am going to run this swap for the next 6 months, then if there is a need to continue, I will find another hostess for it.

If you follow this swap for 6 months, you will have enough blocks to make the quilt in the picture with one left over to make a throw pillow :-)

The video has a stack of three different fabrics and that is how we are doing this swap. So, making one set = making 3 fabric squares into 3 crazy fun nine patch quilt blocks.

  • Video Tut

  • A written out tutorial

    The specifics:

  • Start with 11- inch squares of fabric, this should leave you enough wiggle room to trim your block to 9-inches to send.

  • You will be making 2 sets of these 3-blocks-a-set. You will have 2 partners. You send each partner 1 block from each set and keep one block of each set for yourself. REPEATING TO BE CLEAR: Make two sets of three blocks. Send each partner 1 9-inch block of each set, 2 blocks total.

  • No holiday or religious fabric! Otherwise, fabrics are SENDER'S CHOICE!

  • Newbies are allowed with filled out profiles.

  • If you receive 2 crazy nine patch quilt blocks from your partner you must rate a 5.

  • I will cover flakers, but you will need to give the flaker a 1 rating.

I hope this swap is something fun you will all love to do!

Watching for now. I'm new to making quilt blocks so I need to do a practice round before I can commit to this (but I really want to do this swap series).

Thanks for the tutorial links.

Just finished mine. Beginners, if you follow the video instructions you should do fine. Just be sure to keep your blocks in order as you sew.

I'm loving this block but I have one question.

Is it normal for your seams not to line up perfectly (or is just my beginner-ness showing)? I'm taking extra care (matching seams, pinning) but I still get a little bit off.

TC 06/26/2013 #

I think it depends on the angle which you cut. I found that with a more severe angle, it was harder to get the seams to match. But I think it's part of the randomness of this block. :)

JLVerde 06/28/2013 #

That makes sense and explains why some are turning out better matched than others.

Would it be ok to still use the slightly off (seams-wise) ones for swaps?

I found it to be the way the block turns out sometimes JLV... still looks great ;) and I don't see why they couldn't be swapped.

I wrote out a tutorial on how to do this with the three fabrics and linked it in above.

I just want to let the watchers know that time is running out......

Oh no. I just found this. Can I sneak in?

Sent Kim a message.

Just finished my blocks--wow, they were fun! My sister and I learned together and ended up making 4 sets, two for swapping and one for each of us to keep. I made another larger set for another sender's choice block swap.

We even worked out making one with 4 fabrics, two the same and three others. You just keep the duplicated fabric alternating with the others and it works out to an interesting design!

ERM...I just have to take back what I said earlier...I double checked my blocks and they were all too small! Once squared off (removing minimal bits of fabric) None came out bigger than 8.5" I started out with the required 10.5, but ...FAIL!! I had to make them all over again, starting with 11" squares of fabric. This time, they came out ok, but I'm not sure what to do now. I made one for each partner that's 9.5" and the other is 9", just in case, figuring they can easier cut off the extra 1/2".

Any clue what I may have done wrong? I used 1/4" seam allowances and was very careful in my cutting.

twobluecrows 07/24/2013 #

Ok, I just went and reviewed the video, and she started out with 10" squares, and ended up with a 7" crazy 9 patch block. The written tutorial says to start with squares 2" larger than what you want to end up with--so 11" for a 9" finished block.

Another question--are we supposed to be ending up with a 9.5" so the sewn together finished blocks are 9", or a 9" block so the sewn together finished ones are 8.5" That's a little weird to calculate the finished top.

frenchie46 07/25/2013 #

9" block so the sewn together finished ones are 8.5" is what we are looking for. ;)

frenchie46 07/26/2013 #

I use a 10-1/2 inch piece and do okay, but I will change them to 11" so no one else has that problem.... thanks for the heads up!

TC 07/31/2013 #

I noticed the size problem, too. Mine were barely 9" when finished. I will start with 11" blocks next round.
