Description:

This swap is to create a postcard collage inspired by KS Rives on Flickr. She creates these amazingly intricate collages cutting up maps and text, applying a gel medium over them and incorporating pen and ink to create detail and highlights.

I'm especially drawn to the pieces that use thin strips of text and maps to create a whole new look. It's like she makes a new map out of an old map. I'm probably drawn to these because of the orange. So, for you, find a map with the colors that you love. Incorporate mappy bits and texty bits and create an entirely new collage.

You don't have to use gel medium or the ink but that is how KS Rives creates her look so do that if you wish. We're being inspired by her work but aren't trying to 100% replicate it.

Postcards can be any size but no smaller than 4 x 6 inches. Apply proper postage depending on size and bulk. Preferably sent naked but pop it in an envelope if you think it is necessary.

REMEMBER, THIS IS A PAPER COLLAGE GROUP.

Create something wonderful.

This is sender's choice so you can begin now.

Be sure to include your SB name and the name of the swap so you can get rated.

Have fun!

WOW! I just checked out her Flickr and am amazed! I have never seen anything like it. I just have to give this a try... :D

Just to get clear - can we use a painted background for these, or should they only be collaged, and only papers used? Not sure I will want to paint the background, but just in case...

Hi Wanda, Yeah, isn't her work amazing?

You may work with a painted background for sure but then the main focus should be the collage part utilizing this strips of text and map.

Play with it and have fun.

Want to caution any one using acrylic gel medium to stick their maps, text pieces to background, &/or using gel medium to cover surface of your handmade artwork - use a spray vanish to cover the acrylic gel medium. Acrylic gel medium "naked" on a surface will become sticky, adhere to other surfaces, if exposed to warm, hot temperatures. Use the spray varnish on a non-windy day, cool, low humidity. High heat + high humidity = "bloom" a milky look to varnish surface.

Thanks Whippet. If your postcard is sticky lay a piece of wax paper over it and send it in an envelope.
