Swap Info:

Looking to try a book in a new-to-you genre? Or looking for an excuse to read a book off your Mt. To Be Read? Every month, we'll explore a different genre by reading a single book and sharing our thoughts with our partner. November's genre is urban fantasy. Whether you're new to the scene or just using this swap to read one you've had your eye on for a long time, this is the swap for you.

Genre Definition:

(Wikipedia) Urban fantasy is a subgenre of fantasy defined by place; the fantastic narrative has an urban setting. Urban fantasy exists on one side of a spectrum, opposite high fantasy, which is set in an entirely fictitious world. Many urban fantasies are set in contemporary times and contain supernatural elements. However, the stories can take place in historical, modern, or futuristic periods, and the settings may include fictional elements. The prerequisite is that they must be primarily set in a city.

Does Harry Potter re-read count or The Host by Stephanie Meyer ?

KateKintail 10/23/2015 #

I haven't read it, but I think that The Host is science fiction, not fantasy.

And I personally wouldn't count Harry Potter, either, as the wizarding world is largely separate from the world we live in. However, it does have some scenes that could technically classify as urban fantasy, especially in the 7th book. The idea of the magical/supernatural in our world is definitely addressed in the HP series. But it's a bit of a strech.

Okay, thanks for your answer. I keep on looking.... Or maybe someone can post some suggestions ?!! That would be great !

Hmm by the same logic, I suppose Skullduggery Pleasant won't work either ... Looking looking

Here's a list from Wikipedia (that does list HP, incidentally): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Listofurbanfantasynovels

I really liked Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman. And I'm planning on reading something by Cassandra Clare or Holly Black for this next month.

I really loved Magic Street by Orson Scott Card, which is a retelling of A Midsummer Night's . If anyone knows of something in a similar vein, let me know!

rngstgstll 10/26/2015 #

Sorry, that was a retelling of a Midsummer Night's Dream set in an African American community in South Central LA :)
