QnT Scrappy 3” HST’S #1

3-15-16 thru 4-9-16

Half Square Triangle = 3” finished block with one side bright print, one side light print

1 partner to receive 20 DIFFERENT 3” HST’s

For those of us addicted to the 4 ½” variety of these pretty blocks, here is an opportunity to get creative with smaller HST’s.

Follow these instructions and make 20 different Scrappy 3” pairs of HSTS. You will have 2 matching sets of 20 Scrappy 3” HST’S, one ser of 20 for your partner and one set of 20 for yourself.

Start with two 3 ½” print fabric charms (charms = a square cut of 100% cotton fabric, in this case 3 ½”). Make 20 different pairs consisting of one light print and one bright print.

In each pair set the two charms right sides together. Using your ruler and a pencil, draw a straight line on the back of the light print from the upper left hand corner down to lower right hand corner. Stitch a scant ¼” seam either side of the pencil line. Cut on the pencil line. Press open gently so as not to stretch the block. Trim the dog ears, and then trim the block to 3 inches using the center seam line as your base.

Always trim and press for success.

The goal is to get as many different Scrappy 3” HSTS as possible so please try to use a print only once unless you match it to a different print the second time. No solid fabrics.

We’ve found that the higher the contrast between the dark side and the light side the better the HST’s work in any project.

Note that once you receive your 3” Mini HST’s you can also cut them to a smaller size if you want. When cutting them smaller be sure to use the center seam line as your base. Square-up one side then flip (keeping the block right side up) and square-up the other side. This will result in both sides of the HST being equal.

Please avoid dark, drab colors.
