Description:

A magic yarn ball is a gift-filled treasure, made for another person. This sweet, simple project comes from the book The Children's Year (Hawthorn Press).

Basically, you wrap cool little treasures up in a ball of yarn, with a few beautiful gifties peeking out at the edges, and give it as a gift. As the recipient crafts with the yarn the treasures fall out one by one, and they discover the fun as they knit or crochet.

This is a swap of magic yarn balls. Each one should include at least 100 yards of yarn and 6 "treasures," from very special single buttons or beads to little sets of stitch markers, tapestry needles, or very special bits of vintage ribbon and fabric. Round toys such as superballs or homemade bottlecap pincushions make excellent centers for starting your ball.

Each recipient will be able to share with their swap partner what craft he or she likes to do best, so the partner has an idea of what to include in the yarn ball. Also, please share any fiber allergies you have.

Sign ups close at the end of May. Play begins in June, and packages must be sent by the last day in June. Each participant is strongly encouraged to post at least one picture on the flickr page for this swap.

A few pictures of a sample yarn ball can be seen at the whipup post here: http://whipup.net/2006/04/25/kids-yarn-project-the-magic-wool-ball/

There is a button now: http://larissmix.typepad.com/stitchmarker/2006/05/swappingdeadli.html

user1540 06/ 2/2006 #

Larissa I can't seem to get the button to work. Is anyone else having problems or is it just my HTML phobia at work again?

user1516 06/ 2/2006 #

Hi all- this is my first ever swap too. I have no idea how to find out who my swap parter is. Can anyone help me work it out? Thanks so much.

user1465 06/ 3/2006 #

Mummy Jo: If you're still having trouble with your button; save the button to your PC, establish a static addy for it (i like to upload using flickr because it gives me the static address already, if you don't use flickr upload the button to a published post, then click on the button (once it's published) to get the "archive" static address, and then enter this into your template under the sidebar section:

Juliastitches: if you still don't know your partner at the top of this page you'll see a yellow box that says "as a member of this swap you can" (you have to be logged in), the second option down is "see the partners you send to".

user1465 06/ 3/2006 #

sorry mummy jo it didn't publish the portion that tells you what to enter...i'll email it to you

user1465 06/ 3/2006 #

I have my beautiful balls - two of them, one a jewellry theme, one a nature theme. I only know this because Michelle my swapper told me. I am waiting patiently to discover the secrets in the 'proper' way but have already been delighted by the tiny tiny real knitted-in-the-round sock earings which she made. How brilliant is that? Can we do it again sometime please?

user1024 07/ 7/2006 #

You're all so much more patient than me!

yarnpie 07/ 8/2006 #

Thanks again Amanda, I think I will turn this yarn into a pair of gloves.

user1480 07/ 9/2006 #

I recieved a beautiful yarn ball today from Kelly? =) Its a mossy varigated wool with dark blues, dark greens and then a mossy green layered through, it is absolutely beautiful. The surface is studded with lobster cocktail picks! Very cute already I cant wait to see the insides! Thank you so much!

user1024 07/12/2006 #

I'm getting anzious as mine are taking their time to get over the pond!

user1397 07/14/2006 #

Anybody know what to do if you haven't received a ball? Maybe the non-recipients can get together for a mini-swap? I wouldn't mind doing another one - I just want some goodies of my own!! www.tentenspot.blogspot.com

user1520 07/16/2006 #

I'm with Anne Margaret. Is there something we are supposed to do in this case? Just pair up? ;)

My pal finally got her ball but it did take a while from the US to Austrailia.

user1390 07/19/2006 #

Hi everyone,

I'm planning to email all the people who are marked "not sent" by the end of July, to find out whether they are flaking out or what is happening. At that time, we're going to have about 7 or 8 people who did not get yarn balls, and unless I get a strong commitment from those people I'm going to assume they aren't going to come through.

So, at that time I'll need 7 or 8 "angels" to send yarn balls to the people who didn't get them.

Is anyone interested in being an angel?

Larissa

user1816 07/23/2006 #

If you still need an "angel" let me know - I wasn't part of this swap, but I'd be happy to make one. It's such a bummer to not get stuff!! -Sarah

GlasgowLindsay 07/30/2006 #

Oh I hope someone does this swap again it looks like so much fun! :0)

amberrenee 11/20/2007 #

Will we do this again? I am soooo excited to have found this.
