Description:

A hamsa, or khamsa is an ancient symbol for protection, believed to have originated in North Africa and also in the Middle East. It is now used across cultures, but particularly in the Middle East and North Africa. It is often of particular significance to women.

In this swap, we will create three ATC-sized hamsas out of any material (it should be thick enough to be stable, such as reinforced card stock) -- one for our swap partner, one to share with a friend or co-worker or neighbor, and one to send to an organization that supports those in need of love and tolerance, such as immigrants, refugees, and those seeking a safe space in the world. Feel free to add a little note of tolerance and love to those that you give your hamsas to.

I will screen all swappers, ask anyone I have a question about to do a 1:1 swap, and angel all unsent swaps. Thanks for joining in the spirit of love & tolerance.

If you know more about hamsas than I do, please feel free to inform me! I learned about them from Moroccan and Algerian school friends when I was living in France. At least one of my friends referred to her hamsa as the "hand of Fatima." Similarly, I have had another friend refer to hers as "hand of Mariam."

I plan to mail a hamsa to the Council on American Islamic Relations and to the Holocaust Museum, and give a few to co-workers who might need a smile and a little love and hope right now.

Found a crochet hamsa pattern on Ravelry today, if anyone might be interested!
