TSJ: Thriftstore Art à la Calder

Alexander Calder was an American sculptor known as the originator of the mobile, a type of moving sculpture made with delicately balanced or suspended shapes that move in response to touch or air currents. I really enjoy making mobiles from all sorts of media. Yesterday I made a hanging decoration from a childs building toy, it would look nice hanging in a garden it has a Zen feel to it.

This swap is to create some kind of hanging piece of art for your partner with things you found at the thrift store. It can be a mobile or wind chime. Use something like fishing line, chain or fine jewelry cable to hang your objects so it's durable. Sewing thread is not strong enough. Your mobile has to be at least 12 inches long or 12 inches wide (not counting hanger).

Please take your time to create a nice piece of artwork. If you're going to be late please communicate with your partner before being late and please rate promptly after receiving your swap.

The swap photo is a example made from thrift store spoons. Parts from toys would make good components. Tinkertoys, Lincoln logs, game pieces, baby blocks there are tons of tiny toys at the thrift shop. Kitchen gadgets or cookie cutters are light enough to use.

Examples.

Spoons

Books

Cookie cutters.

More spoons.

Kitchen gadgets.

Junk and odd bits. I think this one would look nicer if they had used a wire basket of some kind as a hanger.
