Description:

We'll be using both sides of the brain for this writing swap. The left side is said to be "the cold, analytical part of the brain" and the right side is "the creative, emotional side of the brain."

You'll have two partners. You'll send each a total of six items (which can all go on a single sheet of paper if you so desire).

a) Go hunt the Internet for three memes about writing, writers or creativity. They can be funny, serious, sarcastic, inspirational, etc., they just need to be on topic.

b) Create three metaphors (or similes) about any three everyday objects, events or things. Here is a list of the 101 best literary metaphors

Definitions:

  • Metaphors or similes are comparisons sometimes using the words “like” or “as.” ... When you create a metaphor, you put one idea in terms of another and thereby create a new vision of the original idea." source: UNC Writing Center

  • Memes are "a concept or idea that spreads from one person to another via the Internet. ... It could be anything from an image to an email or video file; however, the most common meme is an image of a person or animal with a funny or witty caption." Source: Webopedia.

"Most modern internet memes have some element of humor; some are also about shock-value and drama; other memes are urban myths that tout some kind of life lesson, about deeper philosophical content and social commentary; and in some cases, a meme achieves notoriety as a conversational expression." Source: Livewire.com.

Examples:

The image used for the swap is a meme about writers. The following is a metaphor from Ernest Hemingway in The Sun Also Rises: "The café was like a battleship stripped for action.”

OPTIONAL: For those who want to get crafty, feel free to mat or display your memes in a creative way and/or to use your three metaphors in a short piece of writing.

Get your thinking, searching and creativity caps on and go for it with Memes and Metaphors.

The second Alliteration Swap is Poetry and Pen Pals.
