Description:

It seems the craze these days and what an interesting one...Take a decent size rock (I would say no smaller than 1.5 inches) and paint it. Make it colorful and interesting. Send to your one partner. Feel free to send more than one. You are then done with the swap.

What are people doing with these rocks? Ok, so the idea behind it is to paint rocks and place them around your town for the young (and the young at heart) to find. This is a fun, affordable way to get everyone's minds off the stresses of the world and make outdoor activities even more fun! Theres only one set of rules that I have saw so far : If you find a rock, you can keep or re-hide.

I have personally found several online facebook groups specific for my town. They are finding these hidden rocks and taking a picture of them and posting on the group. It looks like a lot of fun.

There are tons of inspiring pictures on pinterest or google. Just search and you will find a lot of ideas.

TIP I LEARNED : after the paint dries, use mod podge to "seal" it. Then after it dries, use a spray sealant over that. This will "Rain-proof" it.

YOU CAN use markers/pens/etc.

I can't join at this time but I absolutely LOVE this idea! Our family loves to find and hide/rehide rocks around our town and we have an active FB group. I hope you'll continue this as a recurring swap as I'd love to join in this fall!

@lostinavalon thats wonderful! I just recently discovered it and it reminds me a lot like Geocaching. I hope youll be able to join in on a future swap if this one takes off. I was a little nervous people wouldnt want to do it.

OH, Heres a tip, Paint your rocks white before you start. Be sure to let them dry...Your colors will be more vivid and vibrant...

paint it with Gesso which is white before you paint it. that is a primer and will help the paint adhere to the rock.

I'm excited for this swap! Just a couple of other great tips for newbies that are important. You cannot take or leave rocks in national or state parks. Also don't hide them in the grass where ground keepers can run over them.. It does seem silly to buy rocks to paint but I have found that it's worth it. Home Depot sells huge bags of white river rocks for pretty cheap. I love painting rocks! I did several these last two weeks in Washington. If you want to see them you can find my Instagram, Myretrosoul.
