Description:

This is an international swap.

(I ran this swap about a year ago, and it was so much fun and well received, and I've just gotten a request to run it again - so here goes!)

Each participant will make FOUR collage pages, and send them to TWO swap-partners - two pages to each swap-partner. Since these are flat and easy to mail, it is open to international swappers.

I am also giving quite a bit of time between sign-up and mailing deadline so you can put them together.

What you will do:

~*~ Take a sheet of card-stock, water-color paper, or other sturdy paper, 8.5" x 11" (normal printer size).

~*~ Go on a "Hunt" for various interesting ephemera/pictures/colors, like shown in the picture - - these were pictures cut from catalogs and magazines and even sheet music. (You can also use dictionaries or choose a certain color, and find anything and everything that falls into that category.)

You can make your pages with a "theme" - like shown in the pictures, with "clocks" or "music" or even "rugs", or not, and just use anything you find.

~*~ Cut or tear them into pieces and adhere them to the sheet of sturdy "backing paper". (I used rubber cement, it sticks without curling the paper and any excess can be easily rubbed off.)

~*~ Cover the entire page of backing paper, applying glue to a section at a time, then trim around the edges to make sure the sides are straight, after the adhesive dries. Have FUN with it!

~*~ Repeat. Each participant makes four sheets total, and mails two of them to each of their swap partners.

These can be used for fun backgrounds on ATC's, and inchies, or homemade cards or other fun paper crafts. Even the kids can help (with some supervision).

If you are like me, once you start this, you may just like it so much that you will just keep going!

Newbies are very welcome - BUT please have a completed profile, first. (and yes, I'll check)

Anyone with 4.8 or higher, with no recent no-sends can join. If you have been rated unfairly, let me know, we can work something out.

I'm allowing a few weeks to get these done - they really ARE quite addictive!

Have fun with this, and let's see what we come up with! If you have any questions, contact me, and I'll get back to you right away.

I loved this swap! I still have some of the collage paper I made last year! This will definately go on my watchlist!

gramsbuttonbox 12/26/2008 #

thanks, Susi, I also remember how much FUN it was to make these pages - and oh yes, it's addictive! (but healthy, for sure!)

Hi Mary, it's good to see back on Swap-bot so you must be feelling better at long last. I loved this swap last year, thanks for running it again. Happy New Year hugs :-)

wowie, it is SO wonderful seeing you again! yes, I'm doing really well - am now finally "settled" into our place in TX, and have been feeling pretty good - I don't wanna overwhelm myself, so am really glad to see the swap limit that they imposed here - - it's great to be back - and good to touch base again - I really do love the pages you added to the books that we worked on last year -

Hope your holiday was great - and that your new year is super!

I am excited for this one. Can we use embellishments? Like glitter, buttons, ribbon, rub ons, stamps etc?

gramsbuttonbox 01/ 3/2009 #

You can do whatever you like, but I think that maybe do NOT make the paper too "thick" - as that might be difficult to mail. I'd sure enjoy, and I'm sure others would also, seeing photos posted to our gallery, once your pages are completed.

As I've written, this really IS quite an addictive FUN craft!

just an FYI - I'd steer away from rubber cement. Rubber cement isn't meant for permanent bonding, and it is horribly acidic. It's archival-ness is lousy--despite any "archival" labeling. Consider any white glue or acrylic medium. If it's too thick for you, just add some water or premixed methucellulose (wallpaper paste) in with the white glue to make it more spreadable and thinner. You will always find controversy over best glues. Experimentation is essential. I have over 30 years of experience and have removed rubber cement from my collection of adhesives.

I just made my first two collage pages. How fun! I can see how this could be addictive! Can't wait to swap!

danit 01/13/2009 #

Rubber cement was designed specifically to the purpose of gluing something you might need to unglued later. I used it a lot as a student on my presentations.

partners will be assigned SOON - so if you haven't started your pages, please do so pretty soon, so they can be sent on time! This IS a FUN activity, and even after you've finished the pages for your swapping partners, you might want to just keep going and make some for yourself, and your own crafting projects! Mary

I know this type of question was sort of already addressed but I want to double check: I do my collages with paint and chalk as well as pictures and ephemera... I'm ok on mailing something a bit thicker if necessary, but this is ok right?

HazelHoney 01/16/2009 #

This sounds so fun. When I was a teenager my friends and I constantly made collages and traded them.

gramsbuttonbox 01/18/2009 #

whichever technique you prefer if up to you, and thanks for asking - I had actually not really thought about painting or chalk, but that sounds great!

hope you have some FUN with these!

Just an FYI - - on swaps that I host, I do NOT check the "items sent" link, because that moves the swap from my dashboard - I prefer to keep them "right up front" where I can keep an eye on them, so if you wonder, I DO post here when I send my swaps, to hopefully keep my own swap partners from worrying - -

hope that helps - Mary

danit 01/18/2009 #

On top of your dashboard you have the "sent" option, where you can find the swaps that you marked as sent...

gramsbuttonbox 01/19/2009 #

yes I know, but as I wrote, clicking that link moves it from the dashboard - I am sending THIS swap today - and this "link non-click" ONLY applies to swaps that I host -

Mary

HazelHoney 01/19/2009 #

I made my first one last night and even though I put a book over it to dry, it still bubbled! Boo! I used white glue too and spread it really thinly. I think I'll take your advice and try rubber cement and see if I get better results.

gramsbuttonbox 01/20/2009 #

good luck, Mary

gramsbuttonbox 01/20/2009 #

two swaps, making their merry way to Regan in NY, and Nora in Sandy Lake - hope you like them -

have a good week everyone - Mary

gramsbuttonbox 01/20/2009 #

on swaps that i host, I do NOT click the 'Sent" link, since that would move the swap from my dashboard - (Yes I know I can access them from the "Sent" link on that page) -

I prefer to keep them "right up front" where I can see them - - and yes, I've SENT my items today (see previous post)

Collage pages sent today, to North Carolina & Georgia! Hope you are happy with them--I had a great time making them. Thanks for this swap, Mary!

Franstuff 01/26/2009 #

I havev my sheets done, I just have to wait for them to finish drying and then make sure they are good and flat.

One thing I always do is scan my sheets so I can print them out later.

I had a great deal of fun with this one! For one of them I printed out some of my own drawings and then cut them up and glue them down like a puzzle. It gives my drawings a whole new life.

I have to admit, I really don't want to part with them. I really like them! I guess that is a good sign...grin....

gramsbuttonbox 01/27/2009 #

The mailing deadline is coming up in a couple days, so please get your sheets completed and mailed on time!

(As I wrote above, yes, my sheets HAVE been sent, but on swaps that I host, I do NOT click the "sent" link, since that moves this swap from my dashboard page - this ONLY applies to swaps that I host - )

Mary

HazelHoney 02/ 2/2009 #

Rubber cement was sooo much better! White glue bubbled and was awful, the rubber cement worked perfectly though!

gramsbuttonbox 02/ 4/2009 #

Hopefully ALL of these should be on their way or received by now - I see that there are still a couple swappers who have not marked that they've sent their pages.

I sent mine, but as I wrote, on swaps that I host, I do NOT click that link until the swap is completely over - I want it to remain right at the top of my dashboard page.

If youve sent yours, thank you, and please remember to rate your partners.

If you have NOT yet sent any pages, please get on the ball and DO IT!

Mary
