INTERNATIONAL

All of my traveling friends know by now not to bring me tacky souvenirs from tourist shops.

I prefer rocks.

Or pebbles.

Or stones.

I believe that a carefully chosen rock can hold the spirit of a place. Besides, I just like 'em.

For this swap, you will:

  1. Go outside -- go for a walk, wander around your yard, visit any place that you really love.

  2. Pick up a rock that really speaks to you.

  3. Write a letter (at least one page) to your partner describing the place where you found the rock, why you chose that particular stone of all the stones there, and why the place is special to you.

  4. Send the rock and the letter to your partner.

Feel free to send extras: photographs, maps, brochures, geological information, whatever. (But don't feel you have to: A rock and a letter are all that's required.)

DO NOT go to a rock shop and buy a polished rock or crystal to send. And please don't pick up rocks anywhere it's against the rules (some National Parks, for instance).

There is no monetary value to this swap -- just an opportunity to spend some time with yourself in Nature, closely observing what is around you and listening to how it makes you feel.

When you send your rock and letter to your partner, you will be sharing a part of yourself and a part of one of your favorite places.

Newbies welcome with completed profiles. Only those with ratings of 4.5 or higher and no no-sends, please. Contact me if you have any questions.

I think it's basic good manners to post in the comments when you've sent your package and to let your partner know when you've received theirs. And of course, please remember to rate, but also allow extra time for international senders and try to make contact before posting a "1" rating.

Note: It's up to you whether you choose a pebble or a boulder. But you might want to take postage into consideration. ;)

Greetings. My name is Lori, I am very new. I don't have any kind of rating yet. I just signed up a few minutes ago. If you buy anything on ebay, I am sturgeonwm on there and my positive feedback is in the 60s. The rocks that appeal to me the most around here are the glacier worn stones I find in central Wisconin. So, I am wondering if I am welcome to participate, or should I get some swap bot experience first? Thanks for your time. Lori

Of course you're welcome! Just fill out your profile a bit more, and then come back and join. You can be the first swapper in my first hosted swap.

This sounds like such fun. I think a rock pet swap would be cool to see too. Just be careful with this swap though, Sending rocks in the mail might alert the postal police. They will crush some rocks and bricks because that is how some drugs are sent inside of them.

Sharpie 05/ 2/2007 #

I'm not sure if you can send rocks to some international places too because potential organisims and seeds or something, so they might get swiped at customs.

SummerLion 05/ 2/2007 #

Hi, all... Thanks for joining! You might want to check with your post office before sending to see if there would be any problems; I can't imagine that they would crush a pebble, but then I'm always amazed at what we're doing now. Anybody international, please let us know if you know of any potential customs problems. I'll try to do some checking, too.

Very interesting...I'll look for a pebble or a stone at my favorite beach or maybe at the pines!

I'm a rock hound from childhood. I'm always looking down for interesting rocks. I even have a collection in my bead drawers (smaller ones wrapped with wire make interesting organic pendants). I'll have to wander around this weekend and see what "new" little rocks/pebbles have popped up in my area.

I'm so glad you've all joined. Please invite anyone you know who might be interested (and who is a good swapper). I went for a walk today and came home with another pocketfull.

Cinnimini 05/12/2007 #

oh man.... I love rocks. I pick them up everywhere...

:D I'm so in!

SummerLion 05/13/2007 #

Glad to see you, Cinnimini!

There were 13 of us at one time, but two have dropped. Ah, well...

Alissa, your package is on it's way!

I just love the idea for this swap! We need more like this, things to get us off our computers and out into nature! =)

SummerLion 05/22/2007 #

Glad you enjoyed it, ArtIndulgence. My problem is picking just one stone (well, maybe more than one but fewer than 20) to send...

Found this on Care2.com today:

English author Sue Phillips, author of Healing Stones, believes that healing stones can be found just there, where you are. Expensive crystals aren’t necessary for healing, she believes, nor does she recommend them because most are mined from the earth and it takes millions upon millions of years to renew them. Instead, Phillips urges us to look for stones nearby that have already been released from the earth, and don’t even need to be dug up or the earth disturbed in any way.

What stones are outside of your front door? Where are you drawn? Take a walk and open your heart to whatever stone draws your attention as you walk by. Some very powerful stones can be found this way – easily dismissed by most as “just a rock, almost as if they are weeds in a garden. One place to check is under an uprooted tree, where the roots used to be. Another is on any path that is well worn by you – you may find the perfect stone that you have passed by dozens of times.

pandagirl 06/ 1/2007 #

I haven't received my rock yet. Looks like my partner is boopgirly. She hasn't changed the status to sent either. I'm waiting patiently. :)

SummerLion 06/ 3/2007 #

I got a wonderful stone today from Ireland. Thank you, Saor, for sending exactly what I was wishing for: a stone from a rock fence. We had those in Tennessee, too, on some of the older farm places. The rock fits my hand perfectly!

Klaneeko 06/ 5/2007 #

Last night my swap came in. It was amazing.. it really was. Made me feel like I was walking the same road with you, GVCU4005522. Thanks so much everyone.

Saor 06/11/2007 #

I got some nice stones from Cinnimini along with a postcard of Vancouver. Thank you I enjoyed reading of how you picked them up.

I am glad you liked it Summerlion - I love the stone walls and I didn't realise that they had them in Tennessee too!

This was a great swap. I am just got back from holiday in England and Wales - picked up lots of stones there:)

Cinnimini 06/14/2007 #
