Number of swap partners:1
Description:

When I started this swap, I asked that everyone donate to Cheryl's ACS fund and send a card to her family. Since a lot of people are strapped for cash right now, I changed the requirements to simply joining this swap in order to honor our dear friend. Now that the swap date is drawing near, I face a dilemma… I don’t want to not assign partners and have this swap wiped from the system (I want to be able to look at my archived swaps and see that it existed), but by assigning partners I will create a bit of a problem because nobody will know how to rate!

After asking Rachel for her advice, I’ve come up with this solution: those of you who didn’t plan to do anything beyond help get this swap up into the Top Swaps for Cheryl (and thank you so much for that!), please feel free to drop from the swap so that it can proceed as an e-swap. This way, nobody will feel unsure about how or when they are supposed to rate. I do hope that you will stay, though, since there are things that you can do that don’t cost a penny! I didn’t know that so many ideas would spring forth when I created this swap, or I would have included non-tangible things as an option in the swap requirements instead of obliterating them. That was my fault, and I do apologize.

I will wait until June 1st to assign partners so that those of you who do not wish to “swap” can drop. Once I have assigned partners, you will have until the send date to do one of the following things and send an email (and photograph, if necessary) to your partner describing what you did:

  • donate to Cheryl's ACS memorial fund. Please forward a copy of your receipt to your partner to prove that you did this. If you can’t find your receipt, please contact me and I will forward the email that notified me of your donation to your partner.
  • share your memories of Cheryl with your partner. If you’ve done that by contributing to the memorial fund page or posting in the forums, feel free to copy that text and send it! Pictures, poems, and songs do count… there are so many ways to honor Cheryl, and I’m not going to limit you.
  • contribute to a care package for Cheryl's family. Contact me for more information (I’ll be making lucky parcels for each of her sons once I’ve collected a bunch of goodies for them) if you would like to do this. If you can’t take a picture for your partner, then I will, since I’m the one that’ll be putting everything together and pictures will be taken anyway!

There are other things going on that you can participate in, but since I can’t of how you might be able to prove any of those things, I haven’t listed them.

Again, I’m sorry for all of the confusion. Please let me know if you have any questions at all!

Remember, you will not get anything from this swap beyond the ability to mourn and honor a friend. Whether or not you choose to remain in the swap, I thank you for caring so much. You guys are wonderful!!!

Suggestions/options for mailing condolence cards 1) anyone who did a swap with Cheryl should still have her address 2) maybe the person hosting this swap could get the home address and Swapbot members could send their stamped cards to her to send to the family. This way the family wouldn't have extra to think about during their time of mourning and they would not have to give their address out to strangers who want to send a card as part of the Swapbot family Just some suggestions I hope no one is offended.

TheFallenAngel 05/17/2009 #

No problem. :-) @Fairy20tails isn't a family member and will be forwarding the cards to Cheryl's family so that they aren't bothered with requests for their address. That's why I ask that they send the cards to her, since she had already asked that in the public forums.

spinjenny 05/17/2009 #

I'm not clear why we would need to wait and not send our cards until partners are assigned? Wouldn't it be better to send the card as soon as possible rather than wait until next month?

craftymomme08 05/17/2009 #

did she pass away?

TheFallenAngel 05/17/2009 #

If you have @Fairy20tails address, then of course, send them ASAP! I was thinking of the people who don't have it, and I didn't want to send an email every day and spam people... if that makes sense?

spinjenny 05/17/2009 #

Thanks for clarifying!

TheFallenAngel 05/17/2009 #

I've been in contact with Frank and have created a memorial page for Cheryl. He'll receive an email every time a donation is made. The link to that page is in the swap description.

Yes, Thanks @TheFallenAngel I am sure Cheryl would be very happy about this. (I have just donated as well.) Amanda

I made a donation yesterday, and mailed my card to Fairy20tails today.

I made a donation yesterday and am working on a card to send to Fairy20tails too.

I don't quite get this swap - will it be one of those swaps where partners never get assigned?

JenDiggityDirt 05/23/2009 #

Cheryl was a sweetheart. I once got a really, truly HORRIBLE swap that was late to boot and I left feedback for my partner telling her how unhappy I was. Cheryl wrote me out of the blue asking me to give the lady another chance, even though she didn't know the lady, but she felt bad for her and Cheryl's kindness made me feel like a big meanie. I reconsidered and rerated and the next thing I knew Cheryl was sending me a gift just because she was grateful for my deed. I was really surprised by how she went out of her way to be so kind. I didn't know her well but that incident really touched me and I think it's really rad how much she touched all of your guys' lives in so many different ways.

grannylove60 05/23/2009 #

Oh wow @JenDiggityDirt that is really awsome:)) Cheryl was just like that:) She had a HUGE heart and was such a caring person:)))

Fittzwm 05/27/2009 #

Cheryl is the first person who "friended" me here. I felt welcome and like I had a mentor when I first started swapping. She reminds me, even in her passing, to remember kindness really matters. Jen, you are proof. Many of us in this community have been touched, blessed by having known her.

She will always be a presence.

myrrhmaid 05/29/2009 #

I don't think there should be any confusion with how to rate. Everyone gives/gets a heart and a 5. That's the way Cheryl would want it. If someone would rate anything other... then maybe they need to reassess why they are here? No? This is about doing something nice and making yourself and others feel good. Share some friendliness and a smile in the face of a crushing loss. Just my 2 cents on the situation... :))

HoneyBadger 06/ 2/2009 #

I totally agree @myrrhmaid . If she was here she would have given everybody fives and hearts! I will be happy whenever I come across this swap in my list (as in not archiving it), remembering her and what a character she was. Then perhaps dig up a few of the threads that she contributed a bit of her dry wit to... one in particular comes to mind. She was a funny lady.

pahasiga 06/ 2/2009 #

I sure hope nobody will rate me heart just because someone else thinks she should do so just on principle.

AynE 06/ 3/2009 #

I think @pahasiga that @myrrhmaid was saying principle is what this swap is about. My first experience with Cheryl was her little poo flinging monkey and no matter what I said her response was I fling poo. I didn't have any idea of how to respond to that and tried to ignore her, perhaps in hopes that she would go away???? Later she pm'd me and was absolutely the sweetest person and showed me how to up load my "I pledge to be nice button" This swap is a swap about principles and Cheryl's were of the finest kind. So, yes, I would rate you a heart on principle, because of Cheryl and I think that is what myrrhmaid was trying to say.

JenDiggityDirt 06/ 5/2009 #

Well, I was your partner, Pahasiga and you got a heart purely on principle. If you read my story above you know Cheryl DEFINITELY would have wanted it that way.

pahasiga 06/ 8/2009 #

And I haven't even sent anything yet... I sure hope Cheryl would not have wanted it that way. ;)

I wanted to share something I made for a different swap in memory of Cheryl.

For this swap, I have been trying my hardest to quit smoking by June 30th. I have cut down immensely and have stopped buying them since June 24th. But, until then I'd like to keep this on my profile as a constant reminder. Thank you for hosting this swap! I will always miss her xoxo

myrrhmaid 07/18/2009 #

I've sent mine to my partner twice. I hope she gets it this time! I made a donation and wrote a poem. I am marking unsent so I can keep the swap on my front page too. Miss you, Cheryl!
