Time for round 5!

It's so much fun to sew with vintage linens. I love the idea of making something cool from "nothing", and I love that retro/shabby look. There are so many possibilities!! Here are a few links to get you inspired:

In this swap, you'll have 2 partners. You'll send each partner 2 FQ (fat quarter) sized pieces from vintage sheets. The two pieces should be different, but they don't need to coordinate. This means you'll send out a total of 4 pieces (2 pieces to each of your 2 partners). A fat quarter is approximately 18"x22" in size. You can include hems, but they should not count in the measurement for the FQ size.

The specifics:

  • You can use 100% cotton or cotton/poly blends, but no flannel, jersey, satin, silk, etc.

  • Please only send fabric that is in good condition. Some fading and wear is to be expected, but carefully inspect the pieces you send out to make sure there are no holes, stains or very worn spots that would make them unusable.

  • The color/print is wide open (except no solid colors!)! Please stick to the 50's-60's-70's era. Check out the links above for some great examples.

  • You may suggest a color preference in the comments below, but this is only a suggestion and is not a requirement for the swap.

Participants:

  • This will be international, since the weight will be light.

  • You must have at least a 4.8 rating, with at least a few snail-mail swaps and no unexplained 1s. I will allow newbies, if you PM me ahead of time and have a filled-out profile.

  • I will angel if needed, but I sure hope it won't be!

  • NOTE: If you are late in sending (without communication), you will be banned from any future swaps I host. I know, that's a pretty lame penalty, but it's all I've got! Having to follow up on people makes hosting less fun, and I want to keep hosting. So please, just send on time. Heck, save yourself some stress - send early!

Looking forward to another round! This will be the second time, had a great round last time :) It says no silk and such, but I wouldn't mind a piece of beautiful Chinese fabric, you know the silk/satin embroidered one. Would love to make a purse out of it!

Thanks so much for letting me know about round 5!

I especially like my vintage linens in lighter colors, but will be happy with whatever. :)

I am really excited about this swap!!! I found several vintage sheets at a thrift store the other day, so now just have to wash, iron and cut and will be ready to send:))

I would love to see this one as an ongoing monthly swap:))

Has anyone ever used vintage curtains for quilting??? I found some really cool vintage curtains at a local thrift store a couple of weeks ago and just couldn't resist buying them:) Matter of fact I bought 3 sets, all different. They appear to be either 100% cotton or poly blend, not sure which. I think they would be nice to use in quilting too!!! Wondering if any of ya'll have ever done any quilting with lightweight curtains before?

sweetavalanche 09/16/2009 #

Granny - I love your enthusiasm! I can't guarantee monthly, but I'll try to set them up more frequently. :)

Bett - I have used curtains, and I think that as long as they feel close to the same weight and weave, they should be just fine. It's all fabric to me! Just wash them first to make sure they hold up - sometimes the sun can really deteriorate fabric, and you can't tell until you wash it.

Ya I want more more more swaps!

IlonaH-If I get you please remind me if you check your partners. I think I have exactly what you're talking about. Pretty sure I have big enough pieces too.

Okay, guys - I just created round 6 and round 7. That will take us through the beginning of December, and then I'll take a break for the holidays. I doubt I'll go to the trouble of posting invites on everyone's profiles (it's tedious!), so go sign up now! :-)

alipink 09/21/2009 #

Fantastic! Fabric is ready to post for Round #5 :-) And I have signed up for Round #6 & Round #7. Yay!

sweetavalanche 09/22/2009 #

I just moved the sign-up date back by one day (to Thursday instead of Friday), because I'll be going out of town on Friday morning and wanted to be able to assign partners before I left, instead of waiting until Sunday. Hope that's okay with everyone!

jennadesigns 09/24/2009 #

Signed up for #6 and #7... can't wait! I'm hoping to make some fun quilts over holiday break!

I would really love some blue/green prints if anyone has them ... but I'm not picky and will be happy with everything! :)

sweetavalanche 09/25/2009 #

Okay, partners are assigned! Thanks everyone for signing up - we had a record number of swappers for this round, yay! Welcome to all the newcomers - be sure to send me a link to pictures if you make anything with your sheets. And don't forget to sign up for the next two rounds. :-)
