Description:

Anachronisms- People or things from an earlier time. Think antique. Think cool old stuff. Think fountain pens, or even quills, not ball pens. Think compasses, not GPS units. Think antique typewriters, not computers. Think Model Ts, not SUVs! Think pocket watches, or even sundials. Lanterns, not lamps. Tea sets, not Starbucks. Think great grandmothers, museums of history, and antique shops. Then think ART envelope!

To join in the fun, you'll create mail art by decorating the outside of an envelope for your partner. Inside, send a greeting, and short description of the tools and techniques used to create the envelope design. You can draw, paint or rubber stamp the outside of the envelope. Add stickers, too, if you like. Keep in mind that any dimensional embellishments will just get torn off, so whatever you add to your design should be flat, and your final project should be smooth. The size of the envelope, the color, and whether it's a hand-made or mass-produced envelope will be up to you, but you may have to pay extra postage if your envelope isn't a standard size or shape. (Check with your post office for specifics.)

This is international, so you may be sending to a partner outside of your country. However, if your envelope is standard, it shouldn't cost you more than the usual international postage amount. (That's 98 cents in the US.)

Mail art should be cool and ARTsy rather than cutesy and crafty. Please put some good effort into your envelope, and send a nice quality project to your partner, something you would like to receive. You must have a rating of 4.8 or better, with no recent no-sends. Newbies with ATC or other art experience, please PM me if you'd like to participate. I will angel this swap, but please don't sign up if you don't have time to make a nice envelope for you partner!

If you think the envelope should be as exciting as the stuff inside, here is another opportunity for you!

How do you envisage the item/s being portrayed as an anachronism, as opposed to simply antiques? Just wondering, as 'anachronism' is one of my favourite words, learnt at a very early age!

TangleCrafts 10/ 7/2009 #

I second your question :-). But maybe that's part of the challenge...?

Chaz 10/ 7/2009 #

I thought anachronism was a placement of an object outside of its time. For instance, a caveman wearing a watch.

oangelo143 10/ 7/2009 #

From wikipedia: An anachronism—from the Greek ανά (ana: against, anti-) and χρόνος (chronos: time)—is an error in chronology, especially a chronological misplacing of persons, events, objects, or customs in regard to each other. The item is often an object, but may be a verbal expression, a technology, a philosophical idea, a musical style, a material, a custom, or anything else so closely associated with a particular period in time that it would be incorrect to place it outside its proper domain.

Right, so Chaz, you got it! Sound neat...watching for now.

It's really simple: old stuff! Might or might not be "antique," because it could be an old-fashioned looking person, someone dressed from another time. Could be a thing from another time. Vintage image of people, images of vintage things. Things that are not from our high-tech time. Some of Tim Holtz's recent images would work well.

You mention we can draw, paint or rubber stamp the outside of the envelope. Could we also collage with vintage ephemera?

SpeechieGirl 10/18/2009 #

ArtyBeth: Absolutely! That sounds great! If it's old, it goes!

ArtyBeth3 10/19/2009 #

Ok, great - I'm in!

MissiveMaven 10/25/2009 #

This sounds charming - looking forward to it!

Technology is very advanced right now, all kinds of shocking discoveries are being made. I'm glad I was born at this time. I recently bought myself a weather station, but I had a couple of problems with it, which they helped me solve here: https://howly.com/chats/we-acquired-professional-weather-station-model-01516/ High-quality technical support is the key to the success of any technology product, whether it's a weather station or a regular app or game.
