Please, what is a pressed penny?

Susan 07/ 4/2007 #

I'm hoping its the penny machine at an attraction like an amusement park or fair or even a store sometimes that you put in a penny and most times 2 quarters and select a picture to be stamped on your penny and then you crtank a big handle and your penny comes out smashed into an oval shape with that picture on it. they are really neat!

it's pre-82 pennies that are more copper not pre-83. and i have a pressed penny swap i do every month and if you wait a bit, the new swap will be coming up soon!

YarnAddict 07/ 4/2007 #

Actually, it IS pre-83, since that is the year they started making pennies out of zinc with a little copper overlay. 1982 was the last year for all copper pennies, and makes the best stamping! I'm so glad you started this swap. I'm new, and I missed the last one, and I was hoping someone would start one. I hope to join kittenmeowmeow's also! I guess I'm addicted to pressed pennies too!!!!

Sorry for the delay in response! Yes, that's exactly what pressed pennies are. :) They're the little squished pennies you can get in souvineer places such as zoos and aquariums around the world. Disney World/Land is known for having a bunch of them, too!

It's all pennies from 1982 and earlier, which is pre 1983. :) I can't wait to join your swap, too!

I actually have a little mini collection of these! I always get one whenever I go on vacation!!!!! I've got a Hawaii penny, a Las Vegas penny, a Reno penny, a Disneyland penny, some local ones from here in Washington and I can't remember where else I got them at, but I've got probably about 10 of them, I think they are so neat!! I would love it if I wound up getting one or more from another country or other countries!!

Yes, this is a great thing to collect. If you have a chance, go to www.pennycollector.com and check out what it has to say about this hobby. It also has a "Locations" link that will tell you where all the machines are located world-wide!!!
