Swap Coordinator:VerkaCZ (contact)
Swap categories: Food  Miscellaneous  Newbie
Number of people in swap:14
Location:International
Type:Type 3: Package or craft
Last day to signup/drop:October 31, 2010
Date items must be sent by:November 15, 2010
Number of swap partners:1
Description:

Send your partner roughly 5$ worth of edibles that do not spoil easily. The catch is that they must be with text on them in your own (or non english if you are from USA, UK, Australia etc) language. Do not attach any explanation what is what, just let your partner enjoy the adventure to figure out what is it and how to use it :-)

The main language in which the edibles are labeled must be in NON ENGLISH language. So you can participate only if you are either from non-english speaking country or ....

If You are from english speaking country: You must have access to at least two common (or one rare like hawaiian or some native american language) different non-english language labeled edibles (for example you have posibility to buy Spanish labeled goods or French labeled goods) - but in that case send a swap coordinator (me) a message confirming it. Reason for two non-english languages is that maybe you will have partner who will for example speak English and Spanish - then you still can send items labeled in languare mysterious to your partner like for example French :-)

Try to choose edibles packaged as mysteriously as possible. If there will be any english text at the back (or text in your partners language), take a black marker and cover it :-)

Examples: drinks mixes, tiny packets of sugar, salt, ketchup, soups, instant pudings, candy, seasoning etc. (but please not extremely strong spices!)

Please post in the comments: 1) languages which you speak (so your partner will know what language to hide from you) 2) if you have some not very serious food alergies (so your partner will avoid the item you are alergic to)

Newbies are welcome however I will check profiles and ban suspicios people.

Please dont participate if you have a serious food alergy (if the items you are alergic to can threaten you very seriously - you know although your partner will do the best to avoid the ingredient bad to you, he/she may not be get used to read all the tiny print on packages ...).

PS: postage spam in the comments will be deleted (if you cannot afford the postage, just dont participate)

Clarifications based on the comments bellow:

1) senders choice but try to stay away from things your partner is alergic to

2) point 1) includes also things your partner doesnt like but dont send too much of it, very little bit is ok (this is swap for fun so why not tease a little)

3) In case package would be checked by customs or your partner forgot to post some food he/she cant eat and wants to check what was sent, put into the package item list in closed envelope

I love this swap! Foreign foods and surprises are two of my favorite things! :D I live in the US, but in a large city, I have access to many ethnic stores (Indian, Japanese, Korean, Mexican, Russian, Haitian, to name just a few) Unless you speak 20 languages, I'm sure I could find something for anybody! :)

tsireldi 10/21/2010 #

Whoa, I found a website that lists all the ethnic markets in my area. http://www.bostonmuseum.org/bostonethnicmarkets.html I had no idea there were that many! Can't wait for an excuse to visit some of them and discover some new and unusual international treats :)))

celephais72 10/22/2010 #

Ooooh...this swap is going to be fun! I read and speak Japanese passably, so I could probably read the packaging for a Japanese item. The only thing I'm allergic to is strawberries - they won't kill me, but they do make me itchy and rash-y...besides, I don't like them anyway!

bren 10/22/2010 #

Ha! The only non-english food I can get is german black licorice and most people(not me!!) don't like it!

Annesdatter 10/22/2010 #

I speak English and German pretty well, so those languages are out for me. Please do not send me anything that contains peppers :D Any other allergy I can deal with.

HR 10/22/2010 #

I Speak English and Hebrew. Please... Notting spicy and I really hate seafood. Edibles that come in a pretty package will win my heart for sure :)

rubyhousesliprs 10/22/2010 #

Is this sender's choice?

athanasiasmile 10/22/2010 #

This seems like a cool swap but I think EU law says all food should also be translated in english.. at least all Greek products are in both languages, description and ingredients.. can we still use those products?

VerkaCZ 10/22/2010 #

athanasiasmile - see the swap description part about black marker? :-D Just cover the english parts and languages your partner knows ;-)

ninta 10/23/2010 #

I speak English, German, Indonesian, basic Spanish & basic Malay. Please don't send me anything that contains licorice, alcohol, onion & nuts! They cause horrible stomachache :( I also don't like rooibos tea & peppermint tea. Thank you :)

JannieT 10/23/2010 #

Nice Swap :) I speak and read Danish, English and German.

SABR 10/24/2010 #

Hunkat88 10/24/2010 #

oritk 10/24/2010 #

I speak Hebrew & English

ITSTEA4ME 10/25/2010 #

This sounds like so much fun!! I'm an easy one, the only language I speak is English. Nothing with any pork or pork derivative (gelatin unless its beef or vegetarian). Also, no fish.

lukrecja 10/25/2010 #

It sounds great! :):)
I speak and read Polish, English and German :) I see, nobody here speaks Polish, so it shouldn't be a problem to find something my partner would like ;)
If my partner would be so nice, please send me something sweet or drink sachets :) And please- no liquorice- I can't even stand the smell of it! :) Thanks in advance! :):)

Hunkat88 10/26/2010 #

Shouldn't we also sent a letter with an item list, just in case someone gets something (by mistake) that they can't eat?

VerkaCZ 10/26/2010 #

well.... not to usefull if you want to enjoy the mystery but in case customs would want to know the content or something, you can perhaps attach item list in closed envelope ;-)

VerkaCZ 10/26/2010 #

Just please note again that this is NOT swap for people with serious food alergies so dont participate if you know that accidentally eating someting would seriously endanger you anyhow (like would not we able to breatch because of swolen throat or something) !!! If you have just smaller dificulties like rash or stomach ache that you are wiling to risk, then ok if you put it in the comments and your partner will do the best to avoid it.

tsireldi 10/29/2010 #

I speak Russian and some Spanish. I also don't like rooibos & mint, but I could live with it. But please, please don't send me anything cherry-flavored. :)

Emika 10/31/2010 #

I speak Hungarian; some German and some Spanish (probably not enough to figure out what's inside a package labeled in those languages, though!)

What a neat swap idea!

missboy 10/31/2010 #

My native tongues are French and English. I'm not bad at Spanish and Italian, but I don't have a lot of food-related vocabulary in these languages so that's okay :) One thing that I really don't like: coffee. Please don't send me coffee-flavoured stuff!

lukrecja 11/ 2/2010 #

how about assigning partners? :)

breccamerie 11/ 2/2010 #

I speak English and some Spanish.
