Description:

This is a swap for members who are just beginning to learn certain skills. All members are welcome to join, but please keep in mind that this may be your partner's first effort - so please be kind when rating and providing feedback. (";)

The tutorial we are going to use for the mug rug is HERE. It is deliberately a bit wonky so we don't have to worry about getting it perfect!

You will note that this is a tute for coasters. I chose it because it is much simpler to follow and make than the tutes I could find for mug rugs (most of which are pieced and bound, which I think is too difficult for a first try).

So we are going to use this coaster tute with one important difference: Instead of cutting your 2 fabric pieces 6" x 6", you will cut them 7" x 9". You will use 1/2" seams and will cut your batting 61/2" x 8 1/2". This will give you the right size for a mug rug.

Please use 100% cotton for the outer fabric, and check your partner's profile for colour/style preferences. Of course, you may use a patterned fabric - it does not have to be solid like the tute example.

Open to all NFS members in good standing anywhere in the world. (";)

Just a quick question :) Are we making 6 coasters like in the tutorial or 1? I don't mind either way, I just need to be sure :)

All the best, Christina

I have changed the send by date due to the possibility of a postal strike next week here in Canada. I also emd everyone.

hum just thinking out loud about the math here...if we use 1/2 inch seams, shouldn't the batting be 6 X 8 inches instead of 6,5 X 8,5 inches? otherwise we'd have to use 1/4 inch seams, right?

I've cut my pieces and am making an extra test mug rug for myself. I think I'll try with 1/4 inch seams on the test rug and see if it works - if not I'll cut down on my batting:)

You are right - the batting should be cut 6" x 8" if we are using 1/2" seams. Hopefully people will figure this out when they go to actually put it together as it will be obvious that the batting is too big. At least all it will require is a quick trimming of the batting.

The experienced sewers will see this right away but it could confuse the beginners so I will email everyone.

Thx!
