About Me

Canada Post is currently on strike and will not be delivering mail until it's resolved. My outgoing swaps may be delayed, as well as my ability to rate incoming swaps. I'll be holding off on joining any more swaps for now.

My name is Jay, I'm 35 and living in Victoria, BC. I'm non-binary, pronouns she/they. AuDHD. I was active here on Swap Bot from 2011-2014 and have just returned!

My biggest passions are travel and being outdoors. I've travelled around Central America and Europe, lived in Australia for a year, and done long van-life-lite road trips in my SUV. I've hiked about 1500 miles of the Pacific Crest Trail, in 2019 and 2024. Someday I hope to go back to finish the trail.

For now, I'm settled in Victoria for a couple of years at least. I'm working on some prerequisite courses I'll need to go back to school to study forest biology at a university here.

Favorite Books

I love non-fiction, popular science books. Some of my favourite topics right now include ecology, conservation, urban wildlife, evolution, animal minds and perception, histories from the perspective of ordinary people, and deep-dives into the history of everyday things (I've recently read books about the history of cars, malls, and trash).

When I was younger, I was a major fantasy/sci-fi bookworm, and I'll always have a soft spot for those genres. I taught myself to read and write Tengwar, the Elvish script from The Lord of the Rings.

Favorite Music

  • Florence and the Machine. I have a Florence tattoo!
  • Fleetwood Mac
  • Greta Van Fleet
  • The Crane Wives
  • Hozier
  • Lord Huron
  • Taylor Swift (mostly from her folklore era onwards)

General likes/themes

  • I love bright colours. My decor colour scheme is aqua and green with pops of warm colours like yellow and orange.
  • Florals and botanical prints
  • Animal motifs, especially butterflies and beetles, birds, frogs, and bears
  • Mushrooms!
  • The ocean
  • 60s and 70s vintage or retro items
  • Art Nouveau
  • Pre-Raphaelite art, especially John William Waterhouse
  • Fairytales
  • llustrations by Arthur Rackham, Kay Nielsen, and Edmund Dulac
  • Victoriana and curios
  • Fossils

Wishlist

  • Letter sets in any of the themes above, or anything you think I'd like
  • Postcards, naked and stamped or in an envelope.
  • Bookmarks. Help save my books from being dog-eared! *Tourist brochures from your area
  • Ephemera, like old maps, transport tickets, book pages...
  • Old black and white photos
  • Foreign coins.
  • Washi tape
  • Onion skin paper
  • Tea, especially chai or fruit teas

I don't collect stamps, but I love getting mail with interesting commemorative stamps. It's probably the easiest and cheapest way to make my day!

If you've got me as a partner in a postcard swap and you're stuck for what to write, I like hearing about your favourite books, the city you live in, your collections, or your favourite quote or poem. Handmade or vintage postcards are welcomed if that's your thing.

Dislikes

  • Pink
  • Kawaii
  • I don't celebrate Christmas, but general winter-festiveness is fine!

Other than that, just use some common sense and put your heart into it, and I'll probably love it.

Comment: Thanks for the letter and the teas! I really dig the paper you wrote on, and your typewriting is generally much neater and better organised than mine. In fact I also wrote you a somewhat long reply and put it in the mail today, I hope it reaches you safe and sound!
Response: I look forward to your response! Thanks for the heart!

Comment: Thank you for the great postcard. It certainly is something that I would not go out of my way to see, unless you like "big" things. In Australia we have a "big" sheep, banana, guitar and fish, plus lots more.

Jay, I've received an awesome envelope filled with all sorts of stationery items; no note with them, so I'm very happy I keep track of things I'm expecting! Thank you so much; this was a very lovely RAK from you. I hope you had a great Xmas and will have a health, wealthy New Year :)

Canada only - stationery RAK -- Thanks so much for the envelope of postcards and postage stamps. Perfect for my collection.

Marryth on Dec 14, 2018:

Thank you so much for the LoTR postcards, and for the postage stamps as well - I appreciate 'em! Thanks for making my day with happy mail! :)

First of all, I'm soooo sorry that I am notifying you so late about the ATC you sent. I have no brain!

I loved the technique! On close inspection, I can tell it took a lot of work. But it also adds a lot to the background - a subtle but effective technique. I can imagine that your collage will be awesome!

Eponita on Mar 22, 2014:

So glad to hear the magazine arrived, I was just wondering about it today! If you are able to show the finished product to me that would be great, I am sure it will be awesome!

teli on Mar 8, 2014:

I was just perusing your Flickr and OMG those adorable mini books with the stamp covers. I think I fell over from shock and awe! Freaking awesome.

I was just checking out your profile, as you've signed up for one of my nutso postcard swaps, and wanted to say a quick hello. Like you, I'm from a rainy little town in BC (Salt Spring Island) and I also love botanical illustrations, birds, the ocean and so many other things that you've listed on your profile. Anyway, nice to meet you! :) xo Arianne
