Indigenous Art Postcard

GREAT swap idea. Sadly, I just won't have any access soon to the sort of shops where I can get such PCs, but if you ever do it again I'll sign up. :)

I do not understand what indigenous means? Indian ART? People that were here or there first..? Indian Eskamo art?

Outsideartist, wikipedia defines indigenous as: "Indigenous peoples are any ethnic group who inhabit a geographic region with which they have the earliest known historical connection"

So, in North America, that would include artwork by the Inuit, Innu, Cree, Mi'kmaq, Ojibwe, and other groups....

Here's the wikipedia article on Indigenous peoples ... I think it provides some good definitions. Basically it is referring to the "original inhabitants" of a particular place. Since you're in the USA, then yes, we're talking about "Indian" or "Eskimo" art.

FYI - Here in Canada, we don't consider "Indian" or "Eskimo" to be very nice words! We prefer to use "Inuit" for the indigenous peoples in the North, and "First Nations" for the many different ethnic groups that live in the southern parts of Canada. I know it sounds like "politically-correct jargon"... but the sad fact is that Canada has a really bad history of racism towards our indigenous peoples, and the old words have a lot of bad connotations.

BTW - I'm reading here on wikipedia (yay for wikipedia ;) that "Eskimo" is still used in Alaska, so please don't think I'm chiding you for using the term. Just don't use it if you visit Canada ;)

I have met some people here who self identify as Indian but most people I know here either use Native, First Nation, Aboriginal, or the name of their specific tribe (Cree, etc). I figure, if in doubt, ask an individual what they prefer, and if I'm talking in general about Native people in Canada, Native and First Nations are definitely safer choices up here than Indian (which seems to be becoming a dated term).

Anyhoo, I wish I could find some postcards by Native artists here because I think it'd be a fun swap to participate in, but I think greetings cards would be the only ones I would find...

I live in a place that we have lots of natives..actually next XD but they dont live here ;~ Amazon is very rich and pretty place to live!

But i have a one. it was cause my resend dont get there yet ;( i want to send a PC with image of our Folk Festival with the clothes that the natives made. Feel free to tell me and ban if this is not what this swap meant to do ^^

When I picked out my postcard--from a set I bought at Amazon.com: you people who're saying you don't know where to get such cards should search on "postcards" at Amazon--, it was overly large and will require extra postage. I thought I'd post here the USPS postage guidelines for postcard size, for mailing within the US, in case other folks might need them:

First-Class Mail Postcards Maximum size: 6 inches long by 4 1/4 inches high by .016 inch thick ---> $0.28

First-Class Mail Large Postcards Maximum size: 11 1/2 inches long by 6 1/8 inches high by 1/4 inch thick ---> $0.44

re. greeting cards: katica, you can easily make postcards out of greeting cards by cutting apart the picture part of the greeting card, from the "plain" side. just a thought...
