Description:

I love embroidery and quilting, and the color blue, so I thought a Bluework embroidered square would make a nice swap.

Bluework is just like Redwork except (duh!) for the color. Blackwork Is a little different being mostly outline shapes filled with geometric patterns.

Simple outline or line drawing images are best, (as in a coloring book) and you can do them in just a stem stitch, or combination of stitches, or cross-stitch, as long as you only use one color of blue in your thread.

The square is to be a 5" square of good quality cotton cloth in white or pale cream, and the image should only fill a 4 x 4 area in the center, with a blank border area, and a 1/4" seam allowance all around. (See the swap pic above ^)

Wash your fabric before embroidering, press it after and keep the stitches neat. Package it in a zip-loc or similar baggie, slipped between two pieces of cardboard, chipboard, etc to keep it protected, and tape your envelope well--the post office machinery lately has been a little shred-happy! :(

Do you know the floss color no. blue work is usually done in?

twobluecrows 05/ 9/2010 #

This is from Read more at Suite101: Guide to Bluework Embroidery: Offshoot of Vintage Redwork Embroidery Uses Blue Embroidery Floss

"...Embroidery floss. Six-strand, indigo blue embroidery floss is the traditional thread choice for hand bluework. Many different shades of blue embroidery thread are available. Use only one shade for each project. Embroidery floss has six strands which can be separated to create finer stitches. For very fine details, try using one strand, two strands for outline stitches, and four strands to create a very bold, heavy line..."

Is counted cross stitch on aida cloth acceptable?

twobluecrows 05/18/2010 #

Sure enid, as long as it's only one shade of blue and fits the size requirements.

Cobalt blue is my favorite color. This swap is right up my alley! Looking forward to getting to the embroidering. Now to hunt for a pattern that I will love to do...............Carrie L.

I've been doing a little more reading about Bluework, and the difference between red/bluework and blackwork--red/bluework is outlline stitching, and Blackwork was more specifically an outline design filled with different stitches as patterns, mostly geometrical and repetitive. Counted Cross-stitch isn't really used in red/bluework, so enid, you might want to consider this, and contact your partner when assigned to see if they want cross stitch design--I'll PM you too.

I could not find embroidery thread with the color name of "cobalt blue" at my Joann's....found some other blues that were close so that is what I had to go with. I'm hoping that won't cause a problem for my partner. I have it all finished and ready to go....thinking about making two blocks to send since this one went so fast and easy! I would love to have a large collection of these blocks with different scenes to make a quilt.

perkl8tr, any blue is fine. The original blue when this type of embroidery began was dyed with indigo, so that color is traditional--think dark denim blue, but as long as you only use one shade in your piece, it'll be traditional enough.
